After this he decided to go to Rampur for his studies. It took him three days on foot to reach Rampur. He completed his studies till ninth grade in Rampur. But due to his old age he did not get admission in class 10th. After which Shyam Saran Negi worked as a forest guard in the Forest Department from 1940 to 1946. After this he went to the education department and became a teacher in Kalpa Lower Middle School.

Actually Kalpa is a part of tribal district. The voting process took place there even before snowfall. Shyam Saran Negi was the first to cast his vote in this election. Let us tell you that in February 1952, the first Lok Sabha Elections It was held, but due to heavy snowfall in Kinnaur, elections were held five months earlier in September 1951. At that time, Shyam Saran Negi was a teacher at Moorang School in Kinnaur and was on election duty. He had cast his vote in the morning and sought permission to go to duty. After this, he reached the polling place early in the morning and the polling duty party reached at 6:15. After this, on the request of Shyam Saran Negi, he was the first to get permission to vote. In this way Shyam Saran Negi became the first voter of independent India.
